Start With What Fuels Your Fire

Sometimes, one of the reasons we don’t put ourselves in front of the camera is that we fear we won’t know what to say.
Or that we don’t have anything relevant to talk about.
Or that we’re scared of looking like a “deer in the headlights”.

But we DO have something to say.

YOU have something very important to tell the world.

You have a message to send.
A message that people need.
A message that people are waiting for.

When we’re shy, the camera pointing towards us becomes very intimidating.

And suddenly we forget that we had a message to send in the first place.

Your message was temporarily concealed or pushed to the side.

You’d find yourself getting it back once the fear (and the camera) leaves.

What’s ONE thing that really fuels your fire?

Think of one specific thing that you’re just itching to tell everyone about.

One thing that you NEED everyone to know.

Whatever this one thing is… this is what will get you to finally spread your message via video.

If one of the main reasons you haven’t created a video yet was because you’ve been paralyzed with not knowing what to say, here’s an antidote.

Start with what really makes your adrenaline rush.

If it’s something that really fires you up, it’ll get your engines running and ready to capture what you have to say on-camera.

And since you’ll be in quite a passionate state while you do this, your audience will see you in your most authentic, raw and compelling form.

Don’t worry about the fancy graphics or video effects.

Just say what needs to be said in the most direct way. It doesn’t need to be very long.

Brevity works wonders with online video.

Being shy doesn’t mean you have nothing worth to say .

If you’ve always wondered how you would figure out what to say on-camera, your search can simply start and end with yourself.

Dig deep within and I’m sure you’ll find plenty of things you can talk about.

Have you put off creating videos because you weren’t quite sure what to talk say? If you’ve already created videos, what was that little “push” that got you started? Reply back in the comments below – I’d love to know your answers.

Bianca. Eep I have been meaning to make videos but I haven’t found the adrenaline/inspiration to do it! I keep telling myself my webcam isn’t good enough + whole heap of other excuses! Thanks for this message, I definitely WILL start making videos. Now to find the fuel! x

I’ve done a few videos, at first I was a bit self conscious but after the first one I was like “hey this is fun!” I also noticed my readers liked the videos and engaged more so I’m definitely doing more videos soon! :)

Ooooh so glad I came across this post. I’m the ‘shy lion’. Something that helps me with videos jitters is taking the focal point off of me + remember to keep it on the end user.

I think you just gained another ‘Courage For The Camera’ victim!

Leona, you shy lion! You’re definitely onto something when you keep the focus to the other person, your audience instead of yourself. Doing that can definitely alleviate the video jitters:)

Ps. Have you signed up for “Courage For The Camera”, yet? I hope you do! We’d love to have you there :)

Great post. It’s so important to remember that just because someone feels shy about speaking up doesn’t mean they have nothing to say (conversely, just because someone won’t shut up doesn’t mean they have anything of value to say). I’m already signed up!

Okay, you may be happy to know that after reading your blog for a month or so, I am slightly, SLIGHTLY less terrified at the thought of doing video :o) I think you have moved me out of the thought, “Video will never work for me,” to “I can see myself EVENTUALLY doing video.” So thank you! Maybe in another 12 months I’ll actually do one :o)

Sweet! I’m glad to have helped you make that jump from “never” to “eventually”. Baby steps, Mindy. One day, I will definitely see your beautiful face on video ;)

I think this is such a great message no matter what is holding us back from doing videos. Shyness is not my problem…(I’m a bit of a ham), but I need to remind myself that I have something people want to hear. I always think..someone else already said that better than me. No More :)

Wow, great question Bianca! So, the first video I did was for a contest – almost 2 years ago! I had to borrow a laptop with a camera and I was so incredibly uncomfortable about it. After a few takes, I got the hang of it all….but the worst and most intimidating part of it was – making it PUBLIC! Sharing it made me feel sick to my stomach. But, I did it, and then….WOOOSH, since then, I have absolutely no problem getting my voice out there! “Just do it” does work!!

Thanks again, Tina

Bianca – I love your web site and especially your new beautiful photo. Way to go. I loved your post. I especially like the adrenaline – use it to make it compelling. I think adrenaline is the good kind of fear and if we dance with it and not repress it that it can work for us. Thank you.

Thanks for the great post! This is a great tip for those just starting out in front of the camera. Shyness really can get the best of you if you let it! Thanks
